Waterford Half Marathon Today

The Waterford Half Marathon returned today and once again reminded everyone why it has become one of the most enjoyable and reliable races on the Irish running calendar. Organised by Waterford Athletic Club, the event drew a large crowd of runners from all over the country who were eager to take part in one of the final major half marathons of the year.

The morning began at the SETU Arena in Carriganore where runners gathered in good spirits despite the cool winter air. The start area was well managed and the atmosphere felt relaxed and positive. Waterford AC are known for having their organisation well drilled at this point and everything from parking to the bag drop moved smoothly.

The course itself has always been one of the event’s biggest strengths. It blends roads, quiet pathways and a very enjoyable stretch on the Waterford Greenway. That part of the race in particular gives people a chance to settle into their stride away from traffic and noise. Even though conditions can be crisp at this time of year, many runners appreciate the mixture of scenery and the sense of calm that the greenway provides. It also helps break up the miles mentally and makes the overall experience more enjoyable.

On the road sections there was plenty of space and runners were able to find their pace without crowding. Local supporters dotted along the route gave encouragement and added an extra lift when it was most needed. Waterford has always had a strong running community and that was clear again today with families, club members and volunteers turning out to cheer.

The finish area back at the arena was buzzing as participants crossed the line. Whether chasing a personal best or simply happy to complete the distance before the festive break, people seemed satisfied with their run. The traditional Waterford AC bobble hat was once again handed out and as always it was one of the most talked about souvenirs of the race. It gives the event a unique identity and is a simple but memorable touch.

One thing runners consistently praise about the Waterford Half Marathon is the value. The entry fee stays the same regardless of how early or late you sign up and you get a certified course, clear communication and a well supported event in return. The fact that the money directly helps fund coaching and training for young athletes in Waterford AC gives the race extra meaning as well.

Overall the event today felt like a successful and enjoyable outing for everyone involved. The organisation was smooth, the course was fair and scenic and the atmosphere warm and friendly. Whether someone was taking on their first half marathon or rounding off a strong year of running, Waterford delivered another memorable race today.
